The Shipman Award - Linda Hall Library

Congratulations to Emily Dellwig of Blue Valley North High School, winner of the 2008 Shipman Award!

Emily's project is titled, "Use of Industrial Orange Wastes to Improve Electrokinetic Remediation of Lead Contaminated Soil." To see Emily's project and a selection of other award-winning science fair projects, please visit the Linda Hall Library. The students' project displays will be on exhibit in the Library's Main Reading Room May 1 - June 2, 2008.

The Shipman Award is given annually in memory of Joseph C. Shipman, the first director of the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology. Each year, to honor Mr. Shipman's legacy of devotion to science, a cash award is given to a student whose mastery of scientific writing is demonstrated in a paper or science project. The student's sponsoring teacher also receives an award and cash prize for supporting student research and scientific writing.

Judging Criteria

1.	A substantial and appropriate use of the scientific literature, which may include web sites but must include peer reviewed scintific journals (whether online or in-print).
2.	A well-written project justification, discussion, literature review, and overall paper.
3.	Proper citation of all scientific literature.
4.	A strong and appropriate use of the literature in the justification and discussion of the project.

2007--Daniel Janvrin of Blue Valley North High School for his project, "Potential of Pine Oil to Inhibit Gelling of Biodiesel Fuels in Cold Climates." Daniel's teacher sponsor was Jan Cyr.

2006 -- Nandini Sarma of Shawnee Mission East for her project, "Use of a paramyxovirus to reduce tumor development in vivo and kill transformed cells in-vitro." Nandini's teacher sponsor was Cole Ogdon.

2005 -- Julia Jezmir of Blue Valley North High School for her project, "Geologic Barriers to Reduce MTBE Contamination of Water Supplies." Julia's teacher sponsor was Jan Cyr.

2004 -- Arup Sarma of Shawnee Mission East High School for his project, "Word Co-occurrence Analysis: A Novel Approach to Speech Recognition Correction." Arup's teacher sponsor was Cole Ogdon.
