Voyages: Scientific Circumnavigations 1679 to 1859
Voyage of Dumont d'Urville 1826-1829

D’Urville continued west around New Guinea and south to Amboine. This city is located in the Moluccas on the island of Ceram between Celebes and New Guinea. Much later in the voyage, d’Urville would leave from this port to head west toward home, but at this point he used it as a jumping off point to head east. He sailed along the south coast of New Guinea, through the Torres Strait, and all the way around the east coast of Australia, to Tasmania.

Amboine had a cosmopolitan population at the time of Dumont d’Urville’s visit. The majority were Malay/Papua, with settlers from many countries including China, Arabia and Portugal. The voyagers were impressed by the oriental influence there.
