Medicine: From Avicenna to Cell Biology

Year 1000
One of the greatest scientists of the millenium was Ibn Sina. He lived from 980 to 1037. From a very early age he was skilled in the philosophy and sciences of his time. He began practicing medicine at the age of 16. He was a very prolific writer, producing works on philosophy, chemistry and medicine. He is famous for his scientific and philosophical writings, particularly his medical encyclopedia Al-Qanun (The Canon). His work was influenced by the Quran, by the scientists of ancient Greece and by the Persian tradition. The Latin version of his name is Avicenna and his full Arab name is Abu 'Ali Al Husayn Ibn 'Abd Allah Ibn Sina.
