What is LEONARDO?

LEONARDO is the online catalog shared by The Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology and The Spencer Art Reference Library of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. It was named for the artist/inventor Leonardo da Vinci.
Please note that the name is properly typed in ALL CAPS.
See below for information on the hardware and software used to run the library catalog.
[ top ]

What does the LEONARDO catalog contain?

The LEONARDO catalog contains the monograph (book) and serial (periodical/journal) records of the Linda Hall Library and the Spencer Art Reference Library.
[ top ]

What is HIP?

HIP, or Horizon Information Portal, is the software used to present LEONARDO to the public. This piece of the library system is commonly referred to as "the OPAC". HIP was created by SirsiDynix to offer libraries access to catalogs and other resources from any computer, whether at home or in-library. We are running version 3.x of the HIP software.
After the migration to new hardware and software, LEONARDO will have a new public face. Check back for more information.

Where and when can I access LEONARDO HIP?

LEONARDO HIP is located at http://leonardo.lindahall.org. It is available 24 hours a day, except for Sunday mornings from 12:45 to 2:00 AM Central Time when the system is performing weekly maintenance.
If the catalog will be down for an extended period of time, notices will be posted on the Linda Hall Library and Spencer Art Reference Library webpages.

Library terminals provide access to LEONARDO HIP during business hours.

What is the Linda Hall Library | Spencer Art Reference Library Profile?

The default profile is the Switch Profile LEONARDO Profile. You may choose from a number of search indexes, and limit or sort by either library's criteria. Item-level information for all materials will display by default.
Separate profiles were created to assist those who are looking for Linda Hall Library items or those who want to search Spencer Library materials. The Switch Profile Linda Hall Library Profile and the Switch Profile Spencer Art Reference Library Profile contain search indexes, limits and sorts specific to those library locations. Item-level information for some materials will display by default; more results may be displayed by clicking the button labeled Other Items.
[ top ]

What is Advanced | Power Search?

Please refer to the Help page entitled Searching for library items.
Both Advanced and Power Search let you apply pre-defined limits and sort results by specific criteria. Power Search includes the ability to use Boolean operators like AND, OR, NOT, and XOR (either or).
[ top ]

How do I limit | sort my search?

To see limits and sorts specific to your location, click on the appropriate Profile icon at the top right of any HIP page.
Choose Advanced or Power Search, then scroll down to the bottom of the page. There you will find that you can limit by location, collection, etc. and sort by publication date, author, or title. You may choose one limit by clicking to highlight it, or choose multiple limits by holding down the Ctrl key as you click on each one.
When you are ready, enter your search term(s) at the top of the page, using the appropriate indexes. Click the arrow or hit Enter, and you should see the results of your limited and/or sorted search.
If you want to change your sort or limit, you may do so after your search has been performed. If you choose to limit at this point, please keep in mind that this does not further limit your search. Instead, it performs the same search with a different limit.
Some useful information may be found on the Help pages entitled Sorting your search results and Limiting your search results.
[ top ]

What is My List?

Please refer to the Help page entitled Viewing My List.
My List is a feature that lets you create a temporary list of items from your search results. You can view My List, add items to or remove items from My List, and email My List. My List is deleted when your LEONARDO HIP session ends. If you have set up a user account, you can move the items to a saved list, which will be accessible for 7 days.
You can also email your search results directly, without using My List. See below if you have not received email sent from LEONARDO HIP.
You may use the citations in My List to request a copy of library materials, but emailing My List does not automatically place an order. See below for further information on requesting library materials.

What does Location | Collection | Circ Type | Status mean in LEONARDO?

This information tells you where an item is shelved, what type of item it is, and whether it is available for checkout.

  Location:
  • The location shows which building (or general area) houses an item.
  • Location codes are in lowercase (e.g. lhlclos), while location descriptions begin with the library name (e.g. Linda Hall Library - Closed Stacks).
  • Each library has several locations in LEONARDO.
Collection:
  • A collection is a group of related items that are shelved together.
  • Collection codes are in CAPS (e.g. SARC), and collection descriptions end with the shortened library name (e.g. Archives - Spencer).
  • There are many different collections, or shelving locations, in LEONARDO.
Circ Type:
  • The circ type (item circulation type, also known as itype) determines whether an item may be checked out, or "circulated"; the circ type has a certain element of format as well.
  • Circ type codes are in lowercase (e.g. lav), but their descriptions end with the shortened library name (e.g. Audio/Visual - LHL).
  • Not all items in LEONARDO may be circulated.
Status:
  • The status indicates whether an item is in the library and (in combination with the above parameters) available for checkout.
  • Item status codes are in lowercase (e.g. b); those that are exclusive to one library have descriptions ending with the shortened library name (e.g. At bindery (Spencer)).
  • As mentioned above, not all items in LEONARDO may be circulated. Some materials (e.g. periodicals/journals) are checked in but cannot be checked out.

What are the recommended web browsers for use with LEONARDO HIP?

  For Microsoft Windows:
  • Netscape 7.1
  • Internet Explorer 6.02
For Linux:
  • Netscape 7.1
  • Mozilla 1.4
For Mac OS 10.3.1 or higher:
  • Netscape 7.1
  • Safari 1.2.1 (1.25.1)
If you should choose instead to run Opera, you may want to identify your browser as the latest version of Mozilla (do not identify as Internet Explorer). We have found that Mozilla Firefox also works well with HIP.
In any case, we recommend you enable JavaScript.
[ top ]

I got an HTTP error when trying to access LEONARDO HIP. What does it mean?

An HTTP error may signify that the page you requested does not exist (404) or it is in a restricted location (403). Please check your browser settings (see the question on recommended web browsers) and ensure that you have typed the address correctly.
You may also see an error if the server is rebooting (500) or it is temporarily busy (503). Please check to make sure the catalog is not down for maintenance (see the question on when HIP may be accessed).
If HTTP errors persist, and the catalog is not down for maintenance or upgrade, please contact LEONARDO Support (or the Linda Hall Library Systems Office) with details including the date and time of your attempt.

I have not received email sent from LEONARDO HIP. What can I do?

Customers of some ISPs may not be able to receive email from LEONARDO HIP in HTML format, as these messages do not conform to RFC 1738. Plain text is the only format that is consistently accepted by these providers; it should display correctly in any mail client.
Because of this, we have attempted to restrict HIP emails to plain text format.
Despite our efforts, some customers may still find that mail from LEONARDO HIP is filtered as spam or unsolicited bulk email (UBE). If possible, please add support@lindahall.org to your list of accepted addresses.
We will not actively respond to email challenges; if you use challenge-response (C/R) spam filtering, please add the above address to your whitelist before sending yourself email from HIP.

What is the Z39.50 protocol?

Z39.50 is a an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/NISO communications protocol. It is used to search and retrieve bibliographic data in online databases of library holdings. For more information, see The ANSI/NISO Z39.50 Protocol at www.cni.org.
We have installed zServer Pro (a Z39.50 server) to facilitate communication with the LEONARDO catalog using the Z39.50 protocol. This provides an alternative to searching with HIP.
[ top ]

How can I access LEONARDO using the Z39.50 protocol?

This form of access requires Z39.50 client software; a list of free and commercial programs may be found at http://lcweb.loc.gov/z3950/agency/resources/software.html.
zServer Pro is available on the standard port (210) of the HIP server leonardo.lindahall.org; enter davinci as the database code.
Using your Z39.50 client and our Z39.50 server, you may search the LEONARDO catalog and configure the display of results. A normal search contains a search term as well as an attribute of that search term (author, title, etc.); when using the Z39.50 protocol, the attribute is be represented by a value. In other words, there is a numeric code for each type of index that may be searched via the Z39.50 protocol.
The attributes used by zServer Pro are:

  • Any - 1016
  • Anywhere - 1035
  • Author Keyword - 1003
  • Author Browse/Alphabetical - 1003
  • ISBN - 7
  • ISSN - 8
  • LC Call Number - 16
  • LC Subject Keyword - 27
  • LC Subject Browse/Alphabetical - 27
  • RLIN Number/Union Catalog - 12
  • Note - 63
  • Place of Publication - 59
  • Publisher - 1018
  • Server Choice - 1017

  • Subject Browse/Alphabetical - 21
  • Title - 4
  • Title Key - 33
  • Title Browse/Alphabetical - 4
  • Series Keyword - 5
  • Series Browse/Alphabetical - 5
  • All Titles Browse/Alphabetical - 6
  • Language Limit - 54
  • Material Type Limit - 1031
A Z39.50 is available on port 7090 of the new Voyager server catalog.lindahall.org; enter VOYAGER as the database code.
