Linda Hall Library Hosts Paul D. Bartlett, Sr. Lecture January 25th

Kansas City, Missouri, January 18, 2007 Dr. Brian Greene, Professor of Physics and Mathematics at Columbia University, New York City, will present The Theory of Everything%E at the fifth annual Paul D. Bartlett, Sr. Lecture on Thursday, January 25, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary at Unity Temple on the Plaza.

Dr. Greene has been working on quantum gravity and unified theories for nearly two decades. He is known for a number of groundbreaking discoveries in the field and for his ability to clearly present cutting-edge research to scientists and general audiences. The Washington Post cites Greene as the single best explainer of abstruse concepts in the world today.

Dr. Greenes research interests focus on the quantum mechanical properties of space and time. In 1990, Dr. Green and a Harvard colleague discovered mirrored symmetrya remarkable property of string theory that has launched a vibrant field of research in both mathematics and physics. In 1993 and later in 1995, he and his colleagues discovered topology change. Whereas Einsteins general relativity shows that the fabric of space can stretch in time, resulting in our expanding universe, it does not allow the fabric to rip. To the contrary, Dr. Green and his colleagues showed that in string theoryFby including quantum mechanicsthe fabric of space can tear, establishing that the universe can evolve in far more dramatic ways than Einstein had envisioned.

Professor Greene graduated Summa Cum Laude from Harvard University in 1984. He went on to graduate school at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and received his doctorate in 1986. After a short time at Cornell, he moved to Columbia University where he holds a full professorship in both the Physics and Mathematics Departments. %

In between teaching and research, Dr. Greene has written several best-selling books that help explain complex scientific concepts. The Elegant Universe was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and the winner of the 2000 Aventis Prize for Science Books, Britains top science book prize. He is also the author of The Fabric of the Cosmos. Each of his books was on the New York Times best sellers list more than six months. The New York Times said The Fabric of the CosmosF sends the readers imagination hurtling through the universe on an astonishing ride.

Dr. Greene hosted the three part NOVA special The Elegant Universe in 2003. The series won an Emmy Award and a 2004 Peabody Award for broadcast excellence.

Greene is the fifth lecturer to participate in the Paul D. Bartlett, Sr. Lecture which is sponsored by the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology in association with the Harvard/Radcliffe Club of Kansas City, the Princeton Alumni Association of Greater Kansas City, and the Yale Club of Kansas City.

This lecture is Thursday, January 25, 2007 and is free and open to the public.

The Linda Hall Library is the worlds largest privately funded library of science%2, engineering and technology open to the public. It is located at 5109 Cherry Street, Kansas City, Missouri. Library hours are Monday, 9:00 a.m. 8:30 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday%2, 9:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m.
