A "Summer Camp" For Teachers

For Immediate Release

June 13, 2008

Kansas City, MO—Summertime and many young people are heading off for camp—and so are about 30 intrepid math or science teachers. It is not going to be weaving or pottery but polymers and Kevlar fibers at the annual ASM Materials Camp for teachers this summer. The camp, which is being held in Kansas City for the first time, is the result of the collaborative efforts of the ASM Materials Foundation, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology with financial support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The camp runs from June 16-June 20, 2008. Two experienced high school “master teachers” who have taught materials science courses previously are the primary faculty.

This weeklong hands-on materials science workshop provides teachers with opportunities to work directly with metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites that will develop a greater appreciation of the importance of these materials to modern life. Teachers will be able to take information and concepts from the workshop back to their classrooms to either teach their own materials science technology course or infuse the concepts into existing course work. The need for teachers to better able engage students in the study of materials is critical. Overall, American students nationally do not have the same thorough understanding of this area of science as their international counterparts.

The camp is part of the Linda Hall Library’s commitment to provide science, math, technology and engineering resources to both teachers and students. The library is now able to broaden its approach in the delivery of these resources thanks to a 5-year grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

The week will conclude with an awards and recognition luncheon for the teachers at the Linda Hall Library on June 20, 2008. For more information about the ASM Materials Camp for Teachers or to arrange a time for photos or interviews with participants, contact Jenny Bruenger at 816-926-8725.

The Linda Hall Library, the world’s largest privately funded library of science, engineering and technology, is open to the public. It is located at 5109 Cherry Street, Kansas City, Missouri. U.S. Dependency on Oil—It’s Later Than We Think

Kansas City, MO—Does the thought of higher and higher prices at the gasoline pump alarm you? Then be prepared for an even more serious crisis when Beyond Oil: The View from Hubbert’s Peak is discussed at the next Periodic Roundtable Book discussion on Monday, June 9, 2008 at 6:00 p.m., at the Linda Hall Library of Science, Engineering & Technology. The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will be led by Scott Curtis, Head of Reference. The discussion takes place in the library’s auditorium at 5109 Cherry, Kansas City, Missouri. Having read the book is not required for participation. In Beyond Oil: The View from Hubbert’s Peak, author Kenneth S. Deffeyes, explores a 1956 prediction by M. King Hubbert, oil executive at Shell Oil. Hubbert predicted that U.S oil production would peak in the early 1970’s. We all know what happened in 1971 with the ensuing initial energy crisis in the later 70’s. Hubbert’s methods predict a peak in world oil production in less than five years. It will no longer be an issue of dependency on foreign oil but the dependency on oil itself that must be addressed. You will not want to miss this timely and thought provoking discussion!

The Linda Hall Library, the world’s largest privately funded library of science, engineering and technology, is open to the public. It is located at 5109 Cherry Street, Kansas City, Missouri. Library hours are Monday, 9:00 a.m. – 8:30 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
