Apollo 11 Memory

I remember Apollo 11 in the context of a summer filled with cultural and personal upheaval. The moon landing occurred about six weeks after I graduated from high school, one month after Judy Garland’s death, approximately one month before Woodstock (no, I wasn’t there), and in Los Angeles, the Tate-LaBianca murders. A month later, I left home for college.

I watched Neil Armstrong descend onto the moon’s surface while working my summer job as a switchboard operator. I saw history being made on a 12-inch, black-and-white television. And it took my breath away.
