Apollo 11 Memory

I was in 5th grade in Adairville, Kentucky, at the culmination of the Apollo program’s goal of landing on the moon. A teacher in my previous school in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, was related to astronaut [Jim] Lovell of the Apollo 8 mission, the first to orbit the moon. I was consumed with the program before and after that mission (Apollo 8), ordering books and materials as the Apollo 11 mission approached.

As the crew flew to and orbited the moon, my keen interest (known to the school where I was in a summer program) yielded special privileges to watch footage (as the landing unfolded) on the school TV. A special time in a young boy’s life (also the landing was on my sister’s 19th birthday).
