Linda Hall Library President Lisa Browar has been elected to membership in the American Antiquarian Society (AAS). Founded in 1812 by Revolutionary War patriot and printer Isaiah Thomas, the American Antiquarian Society is both a learned society and a major independent research library located in Worcester, Massachusetts.
AAS members, who currently number over 1,000 individuals, are elected in recognition of their eminent works of scholarship, artistic endeavors, or public engagement in pre-twentieth-century American history and culture. Additionally, people are also elected for their broad support of cultural institutions, or distinction as community or national leaders in humanistic affairs.
The AAS membership includes scholars, educators, publishers, collectors, cultural administrators, civic leaders, journalists, writers, and filmmakers. Fourteen presidents of the United States have been members, and AAS members have been awarded 80 Pulitzer Prizes and 67 Bancroft Prizes for their work.
