Applications for Upcoming Fellows Program Includes Innovative 80/20 Pilot

The Linda Hall Library has opened applications for its 2017-18 Fellows program, which will include a pilot for an innovative 80/20 Fellowship.

The Fellows program, which began in 2012, is open to pre- and post-doctoral scholars for research stays ranging from one week to a full academic year. The Fellowships are awarded to projects in history of science and related science and technology studies fields that make use of the Library’s outstanding collections.

This year, the Library will offer a new 80/20 Fellowship, which addresses one of the prevailing concerns in higher education – the high number of students trained in PhD programs versus the relatively small number of available tenure-track jobs. The 80/20 Fellowship gives pre-doctoral students the opportunity to enhance their skill sets and prepare them for a wider range of jobs within and outside of academia.

The 80/20 Fellow will conduct research during a 10-month academic year the fellow will spend approximately 80 percent of his or her time on primary dissertation research and 20 percent planning, curating, and installing an exhibition, under the mentorship of the VP for Public Programs.

"From a broad perspective, today’s doctoral students are tomorrow’s educators, community leaders, and public intellectuals, whose dissertation projects will turn into books, lectures, and creative projects," said Tania Munz, the Library's Vice President of Research and Scholarship. "Innovative opportunities like our 80/20 Fellowship give young scholars a chance to spend time in the collections and to think and work differently as they engage with the public."
