May the Fourth Be With You: Library Honors Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair winners; Recognizes Shipman Award Winner

Monday evening’s Star Wars-themed reception honored students with outstanding projects from the 2015 Greater Kansas City Science and Engineering Fair held this past March. Princess Leia greeted guests throughout the evening as they dined on thermal detonators, Wookiee cookies, and Corellian cakes. The reception honored students whose projects at the fair had been chosen by Library staff for display in the Main Reading Room. Staff members selected the projects for display based on scientific content, unique approaches to problem solving, and visual composition. The winning projects were on display at the Library from April 6 to May 4. Library President Lisa Browar awarded certificates to all students who were selected to participate in the project display. President Bowar also recognized the 2015 Joseph C. Shipman Award winner, Shyam Narayanan, from Blue Valley CAPS and his teacher, Eric Kessler. The Library bestows the Shipman Award to a senior division student who makes excellent use of scientific literature in their project. Following the awards ceremony, Rodrigo Carvajal, Manager of Technical Training at Kiewit Engineering and Design, and Jean Pedley, Operations Manager—Engineering Services at Kiewit, gave a brief presentation on a career in engineering.
